A Sister Parish Reflection

During my visit to St. Genevieve Parish in the fall of 2014, I made it a point to observe every classroom of their school during a typical school day. I was impressed with the dedication of all the teachers, and with the enthusiasm and seriousness of purpose in the students.
During recess, I watched the children gleefully running around the school yard, and remember thinking that they are like children everywhere. At lunchtime, I watched with admiration as two young women thoroughly soaped up and rinsed the hands of the three-year-olds in preparation for their lunch. Finally, with the other members of our group, I met with the faculty when the school day ended, and listened to the translator convey their appreciation of our help.
I was truly charmed by the children – especially those in the lower grades. Their energy, their bright, inquisitive eyes, and their beautiful smiles filled me with joy. At the same time, I felt regret that they had to be schooled in such primitive conditions. I felt that these children deserved better. So, I will continue to support our sister parish’s school, and encourage other parishioners to do the same.
