Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Last weekend’s celebration of the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ was also the conclusion of the choir ministries’ season, and it was a fitting end to a glorious year of music making. I am very grateful to David Garrido Cid and all our singers for the uplifting music at all our weekend liturgies and other special liturgical celebrations.
The weekend included a special concert to commemorate the Solemnity – “One in Harmony” – in collaboration with the Schola Cantorum, Organ and Brass Ensemble from the Cathedral of St. Joseph and their director, Gabriel Löfvall. On Saturday, the choirs performed a concert following the 4:00 PM Mass, and on Sunday morning they performed a similar program prior to the 11:00 AM Mass at the Cathedral. I was grateful that I could concelebrate the Mass along with Fr. John Melnick, the Rector of the Cathedral, who was very gracious in his acknowledgement of our musicians. I was also very happy to see a number of our parishioners who came to the Mass at the cathedral.

A few weeks ago, as I was browsing around a local Barnes & Noble, I found a book, the second in a trilogy, of the American Revolution by the historian Rick Atkinson. So I managed to find the first volume online, The British Are Coming, which covers the period from 1775 to 1777. I have had a long-held interest in the founding era of the United States, and with the 250th anniversary of our founding coming next month, I decided to dedicate my summer reading list to these very detailed histories. And as we celebrate Flag Day this year, let us hope and pray that the stars and stripes will always fly in a land where democracy and its high ideals will never fade away.
